What he hasn't told you is that we, like the knights before us, require an awakener's mana to function. We can fill the gap temporarily through other means, which he has no problem doing, but in the long-term it's detrimental to his health to avoid a contract, which he does have problems with. I assumed you were unaware of the severity of the problem or else he wouldn't be allowed to run about without one.
